Arathusela hates going to bed. Her parents are exhausted by day's end, so they reverse roles with her. The book is a one-note joke, but kids will appreciate the tables-turned humor ("You forgot to sing us a song") and reassuring resolution. Auth has a light touch; his watercolors display the particular coziness of domestic life at night.

Wilson's life is not much fun until his long-lost uncle arrives. Uncle Pirate, along with his talking penguin, Captain Jack, employs pirate logic to fix Wilson's woes at school and save the family from financial ruin. Though it's rather light on plot, the story's goofy humor will entertain pirate fans. Lively black-and-white pen-and-ink and watercolor spot art illustrates most pages.

George brings home a series of pets, but his parents object to the excessive shedding (dog), excessive breeding (mice), and big teeth (shark). After his parents promise him a bird, George acquires a bad-mannered parrot and his folks must stick to their vow. Both text and art are amusing but pale in comparison to Steven Kellogg's funnier Can I Keep Him?

With his parents out of town, eleven-year-old Duncan gets to know his visiting uncle Dudley, who has an interest in "arcane sciences and practices." A magic spell turns the next-door neighbor into a statue, a recipe conjures up goblins, and a love potion causes romantic mayhem in a generally amusing, but rather randomly plotted novel, illustrated with cartoonlike art.
