(4) K-3 Illustrated by Nicola Bayley. In slightly stiff prose, an adventure-seeking mouse sets off to find "the biggest creature in the world." She encounters creatures of increasing size (from a frog and bird to a tiger and polar bear), all of whom ask to come along. Finally the new friends witness "a wonderful thing": a breaching whale. Soft, highly detailed colored-pencil illustrations portray this peaceable kingdom.

(3) K-3 Illustrated by Nicola Bayley. When Ezekiel and his son Raphael, gentlemen tygers living in proper Victorian England, decide to go adventuring, they set out in a questionable boat. All goes well, until they encounter a storm and are shipwrecked. Their misadventures as they return to civilization are told in rhyming couplets well suited to reading aloud and accompanied by lush illustrations evoking the time period.

(3) K-3 Illustrated by Nicola Bayley. In this cumulative tale, a child invites a scarecrow and its mouse friend in out of the snow. Soon more and more animals fill the warm house. The animals in the gentle illustrations look soft, cuddly, and furry, and the snowy cottage is invitingly still, quiet, and serene.

(3) K-3 Illustrated by Nicola Bayley. Katje the cat's life is disrupted when her master marries. Her mistress shoos her out of the house and away from the cradle, which soon holds a brand-new baby. But when Katje saves the child during a flood, she regains her status in the household. Inspired by a true event in Holland in 1421, the text is accompanied by small illustrations that focus in tightly on the action but also help develop the characters.

(4) K-3 Illustrated by Nicola Bayley. Using images of animals and plants from Christmas carols and miracle tales, Root imagines the cradle song that Mary would have sung to the baby Jesus. The double-page spreads are reminiscent of illuminated medieval manuscripts, and each focuses on a single image from nature. The text and art are accomplished, but some may find the book too precious and contrived.
