Think About series.
Illustrated by
Emily Bolam.
These animal behavior/social studies hybrids follow a similar pattern. Silly animal questions ("Does a squirrel cook?") and informative answers ("A polar bear sleeps on the snowy ground inside a den") are followed by simple discussions of human customs. Bolam's inviting illustrations make the most of the premise and reflect the text's informal tone. Prompts for further investigation are appended. Review covers these Think About titles: Does a Bear Wear Boots?, Does a Panda Go to School?, Does a Camel Cook Spaghetti?, Does a Beaver Sleep in a Bed?, and Does a Woodpecker Use a Hammer?.

Early Experiences series.
Illustrated by
Emily Bolam.
Clearly written texts discuss animal locomotion and humans' means of transportation ("...people are smart enough to invent ways to help them move faster..."). The humor is just right for the audience ("Does a cheetah drive? / What a silly idea!"), and, like the text, the uncluttered illustrations of amiable-looking animals and people are both informative and amusing.

After his beloved balloon pops, donkey Buzzy first mourns it, then moves on to play with a favorite (and un-pop-able) stuffed animal. The rhymes are only passable, but toddlers may find succor in this lighthearted take on coping with loss. With his boldly colored possessions and thick-black-outlined body, Buzzy could be an extra from one of Lucy Cousins's Maisy books.

Buzzy's "I-don't-want-to-do-it" attitude earns him the punishment of ten minutes in his room. While there, he plays time-out with his toys; when his own time-out is over, he is in a more cooperative mood. With an uneventful text that is only half in rhyme, Ziefert presents another typical childhood situation. The draw for readers will be Bolam's expressive, bold black-outlined illustrations.

Murphy the dog describes his experience participating in a dog show with his young owner. His matter-of-fact narration is mildly amusing ("Here I am weaving around poles"). Though there's no emotional thread to hook a child who isn't already a dog lover, Bolam's loose-handed art is easy on the eyes and lends Murphy an extra dash of personality.

Young donkey Buzzy hosts a playdate with animal friends Allie and Sally; it goes smoothly despite wee conflicts about sharing. This lift-the-flap book is pitched to a slightly older crowd than Lucy Cousins's Maisy titles, but given the simple sentences, low level of conflict, and bright, flat images thickly outlined in black, a comparison--and a favorable one--is inevitable.

Young donkey Buzzy is undone: his mother won't let him bring his stuffed-animal lamb to preschool. He sulks at first, then joins the other kids and has a smashing time, especially when one child pretends to be a lamb. Ziefert has nothing to add to the kid-must-separate-from-security-object picture-book genre, but Bolam's simple, black-outlined images in fresh color combinations are winning.

Although Murphy, a Labrador retriever, hates being put into a crate for the long plane ride to Paris, once he's there, he and his owner enjoy shopping, French food, and going to the Louvre. The story lacks tension but provides an amusing introduction to traveling in Paris. The simple, expressive illustrations give Murphy plenty of personality.

"On the third day of Christmas / my grandma gave to me / three hula hoops...," etc. Modeled on "The Twelve Days of Christmas," this ho-ho-hum cumulative rhyme focuses without apology on a little girl's pleasure at receiving presents, although on the twelfth day she does give her friends balloons. The flat, cheerful illustrations resembling children's art hit the right holiday note.
