After nearly being caught by a fox and an owl, they give Mother a dandelion and strawberry--and Little Mouse sings a song. Brett's illustrations, rendered in glowing, brilliant colors, are the perfect complement to the cozy, sentimental story. An affectionate tribute to the holiday.

Determined to celebrate Valentine's Day, Mrs. Bear sets "her alarm for February 14" and gets busy making valentines, retrieving treats, and trying to rouse hibernating Mr. Bear. The gentle story's surprise ending emphasizes the affection between the couple. Set against snow-white pages (sans what would become her trademark), Brett's detailed line drawings are enhanced with bursts of red and honey-brown.

In a Christmas story that will appeal to doll fans and ballet lovers alike, second-graders Ilyana and spoiled-rich-girl Mary Jane both pine after the same realistic-looking ballerina doll, Noelle. Noelle herself, though, dreams only of a life on the stage. In a plot that relies heavily on coincidence, everyone gets what she deserves. Brett's black-and-white illustrations add to the seasonal atmosphere.

The classic Christmas poem is illustrated with Brett's characteristically detailed paintings, which feature scenes of the adventures of two stowaway elves on Santa's sleigh. Many of the familiar events of the narrative are illustrated along the borders, and it is jarring for the text to have so little in common with some of the large, main pictures.
