He begins with a number of pages about Chicago before moving on to the rest of the state. Being Mr. "Geo," he keeps geography in mind, while touching on topics such as history, climate, and places of scenic beauty. Though not especially remarkable, the genial illustrations are serviceable.

(4) K-3 Illustrated by C. B. Canga. Hals Halson, bent on proving himself as the greatest lumberjack, strides into camp. Lonely Paul Bunyan would rather start a friendship than a competition, but he's forced to best Hals before the latter will bury the hatchet. The story, aptly hyperbolic, is a little weak on plot. Digital-looking cartoon illustrations using woodlike textures and sharp angles reflect the characters' shared skills.

Hoping to save the family farm, seemingly average Pierre, with the help of hammy narrator Aurore, delivers his family's pickles to a contest, facing danger at every turn. The story, with its outrageous coincidences and wacky characters, works a little too hard at trying to achieve effortless whimsy.

(3) 4-6 Alec Flint, Super Sleuth series. Illustrated by C. B. Canga. Alec's class is studying Christopher Columbus. An exhibit at the local museum would help, but it, and Alec's art teacher, have gone missing. Following in his police officer father's footsteps, Alec and his partner Gina are on the case. Smartly combining a crime drama with some American history, this book succeeds in being both entertaining and informative.
