Now a freshman, Wyatt--who foiled a terrorist plot in eighth grade (The Worst Class Trip Ever)--inadvertently uncovers illegal animal trafficking by the powerful family of the bullying Bevin brothers, which leads to a Halloween night of typical Barry shenanigans. The stakes, and therefore the tension, are lower than in Wyatt's first adventure, but comical first-person narration makes him easy to root for.

A Dutch sea captain describes touring Europe in the 1700s with Indian rhinoceros Clara. Featuring plenty of period details, the art is a handsome mixed-media pastiche of reproductions, drawings, and the captain's (ostensible) journal pages. With no sources, readers will be clueless as to whether this is based on a true story (it is) or just an entertaining yarn.

McCutcheon's readable prose relates the stories of nine young people whose contributions range from inventing television (Philo Farnsworth) to naming Pluto (Venetia Burney). Though their major contributions mostly occurred when they were adults, he correctly emphasizes their childhood precocity and hard work at their projects. Childlike art and occasional photos illustrate the text. Reading list.
