In colloquial first-person Brooklynese, Winter adeptly chronicles Koufax's star pitching career. Carrilho's illustrations complement the text, exquisitely capturing the sport's drama with angular, elongated figures; the use of color (red, blue, and, most strikingly, gold) to accent the graphite drawings; and a variety of textures, including an attention-grabbing lenticular cover. Sidebars provide interesting and relevant baseball stats. Websites. Glos.

In ten original trickster stories, the child narrator either believes in the trickster when no one else does, or alone sees through him. "A Grave Situation" is a cliffhanger; "The Best Lie Ever Told" scores on its crafty staging; and the two-part story about rascally Cake Norris is a humdinger. Grandly melodramatic black-and-white illustrations capture the stories' moods.
