In this picture book based on a WWII mystery, the philosopher Mr. (Walter) Benjamin flees his city for "dangerous" ideas. Mrs. Fittko (a real Austrian Resistance fighter) is unable to get Benjamin safely across a border. The book then speculates on the contents of his suitcase--an odd theme for children with little background knowledge, but brief notes offer limited context. Unique mixed-media compositions illustrate the story.
