These eight short poems introduce seven dinosaurs and their similarities and differences. Although the meter and rhyme can be off and some endings don't pack the punch intended, the pieces are accessible and amusing. Bright cartoonlike illustrations make this a friendly, not frightening, world. Lift-the-flaps extend the action as well as the poems.

Eight short poems point out the silliest and scariest features of prehistoric creatures. Although the meter and rhyme can be off and some endings don't pack the punch intended, the poems provide an accessible, amusing introduction to dinosaur similarities and differences. Bright illustrations make this a friendly, not frightening, world. Lift-the-flaps show that the pages can't contain the title behemoths.

In this follow-up to Class Two at the Zoo, Class Three goes on a boating trip. After being overtaken by pirates, it's the kids (plus octopuses) to the rescue. The text's rhymes aren't always seaworthy, but readers will appreciate watching their peers outsmart a pack of dimwitted grownups. The detail-rich illustrations have the comic sensibility of cartoons.

While at the zoo, the children of Class Two notice all sorts of animal high jinks but fail to see the anaconda, who gobbles them one by one. From the bouncy mock-sinister rhymes to the illustrations featuring naively wide-eyed kids and the happy ending (classmate Molly saves the day), readers who aren't afraid of snakes will find much to enjoy.

Wolf Rocky thinks it'll be easy to rob an unsuspecting lamb traveling through his territory. However, before he even gets his hands on the box the lamb is carrying (which contains a comically large bejeweled crown), Rocky runs into so much trouble that he swears off nastiness forever. The colorful textured illustrations portray with comic relish the scrawny wolf's misfortunes.

Holly, a precocious young hare, tries to takes over for her uncle Herbert, owner of the Hare House, the best salon in town. By whipping up outrageous coiffures for all the animals that visit the shop while Herbert is in the stockroom, she gives her uncle the shock of his life. The humorous illustrations depict the animal inhabitants in their unusual new hairdos. The story is mildly diverting, but it's a one-joke book.

Giddy's fear of heights makes him a misfit in his mountain goat family. What's more, the sheep in the valley want nothing to do with him, until (rather predictably) he forgets his fear and rescues a lamb who's stranded on a cliff. The humorous illustrations feature impossibly steep mountains, and the occasional curved or tilted line of text will catch the reader's eye.

The Big Bad Wolf, feeling lonely, vows to change his image and make friends by being useful, good, and noble. But no one believes he's reformed. The slight, silly narrative, accompanied by textured illustrations, follows the wolf as he's first rejected by Mrs. Goose, Mrs. Chicken, and Mrs. Duck and then welcomed when he finds and returns (instead of eats) Mrs. Duck's lost duckling.

When Jasper the cat decides to put on a show, the other animals--including acrobatic sheep and juggling cows--want to join in. At showtime, however, no one is left to be in the audience, but Jasper declares, "The show must go on!" Then, with wild enthusiasm, they all perform simultaneously. Chapman's slightly goofy characters are just right for this silly story.
