Baggini's book poses plenty of questions for readers: "Can a baby have a religion?" "Could there be more than one God?" "Can we criticize religion?" "What is the Devil?" He doesn't offer any definitive answers, allowing for intriguing discussion possibilities for receptive readers. Cartoon illustrations contribute to the lightness of tone.

Brake uses a question-and-answer format to cover a wide range of astronomy topics, split into chapters on the formation of the universe, stars, the nature of time, and space exploration and alien life. Eye-pleasingly goofy cartoons placed on colorful construction paper–like pages don't make the dense explanations any easier to understand, but the volume may whet science-minded readers' appetites. Law leads his readers to consider important philosophical ideas by working through challenging questions ranging from "What is the meaning of life?" and "Could a robot think?" to "Are we all selfish?" and "Are there really miracles?" The questions are intriguing, Law's answers are thoughtful, and Choksi's illustrations have a cool retro vibe. Reading list, websites. Glos., ind.
