Simplicity and understatement characterize the writing of this brief tale of pioneer days in Tennessee. In a thought-provoking story, Luke finds a baby washed ashore by a flooding river and attempts to raise him. This version contains the illustrations from the 1990 edition, which give a more realistic flavor to the story but lack the artistry of the original Weisgard pieces.
