Accompanying their father, a minibus driver, young Fatima and Galo look after passengers' luggage on the roof: two mopeds, three bicycles, four cans of cooking oil, five sacks of rice, etc. The exuberant adventure through Burkina Faso passes waterfalls, hippos, 1.8-billion-year-old rock domes, and the Grand Mosque in Bobo Dioulasso, all vividly depicted in Corr's colorful, naively styled illustrations.

This bright and engaging atlas offers facts and characteristics for every country throughout the seven continents. Often relying on labeled illustrations to convey what a country is known for (Honduras: bananas and the Honduran white bat; Yemen: sand cats and apricots), the well-selected and accessible text balances out the colorful and busy maps featured on every page. Level-appropriate trivia questions appear throughout. Ind.

After Penda's mother entrusts her to carry a bowl of milk on her head to her father, who is tending sheep in the grasslands, she's determined not to spill a drop. Penda's self-directed pep talks ("Don't shiver, don't quiver, / don't fall in the river, girl") are charming, and the mural-like art set along the banks of the Niger River is beguiling.

Corr uses the lyrics of "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" to proclaim a pro-environmental message. Gouache illustrations using simple shapes and bold colors show children around the world joyously interacting with the earth and nature. The more instructive (and didactic) appended text emphasizes the problem of global warming. Music and a CD of the spiritual are included.

With intensely colored gouache paintings that dance off the pages, this collection of stories from India entices readers to enter the worlds of the Hindu gods and goddesses, kings and queens, and the ordinary people who inhabit towns and villages. An introduction about India's history begins the book, and each tale is prefaced by information about the Indian state where it's from. Bib.

Naive gouache paintings with jewel-like colors show Granny traveling by magic carpet (her first purchase in Turkey), buying two cats in Thailand, three Mexican masks, four Chinese lanterns, five Swiss cowbells, and so on until she buys ten Peruvian llamas. The rhyming text is trite, but the attractive pictures will draw children back to look for the objects.
