Mouse Angelina and her ballet troupe tour the countryside performing Cinderella. When their scenery and props are damaged, they improvise with garden materials. Readers who love ballet will enjoy the details of a dancer's life, but this is also a gentle story about having new adventures and overcoming obstacles. Craig's art is appropriately frothy and delicate.

When her farm animals get cold, Bonnie Bumble knits for them. The sun comes back to see what's happening, and he gets a hat, too. A very simple and nicely repetitive text consists of short sentences or fragments; the animals' sounds indicate their shivering ("m-m-m-moo"; "cl-cl-cl-cluck"). Craig's ink and watercolor illustrations of the animals in their winter wear are playful and endearing.

Angelina travels to the Big Cheese, a city clearly styled after New York, to dance with her cousin in the Big Cheese Dance Show. Once she and her cousin resolve their competition--which is better, tap or ballet?--they perform a special duet. Like the other books about Angelina, this one will satisfy her young fans with its customary feminine details.

Amy brings some sustaining talismans from home on an overnight stay at Grandma's. When homesickness hits, she discovers that her belongings have taken on magical powers; her bedside mat, for example, becomes a flying carpet that whisks her home for a reassuring glimpse of her family. Pearce and Craig pack a lot of emotion and truth into this gentle story.

A little girl is fascinated by an empty house she walks past with her mother and baby sister. One day, beckoned by a little boy (garden gnome come to life?), she explores the grounds and finds various unexpected wildlife. Craig's soft etchings and aquatints convey the surprises around every corner of a story that is all about imagination.

Angelina again gets to show off her dancing skills--this time at a royal wedding with her friend Princess Sophie. When Angelina's little brother Henry, "the best hide-and-seeker," rescues the two mouse-girls from being stuck in a tower, all ends happily. Although the plot is thin, the good spirits and elegantly detailed illustrations will be welcomed by Angelina's fans.

When Till's beloved dog vanishes, a strange little man--a Finder--appears at the garden gate and offers to help. The dreamlike story unfolds slowly, and Craig's illustrations, sketchlike black-and-white drawings and crosshatched color pictures, echo the novel's lilting cadences. Pearce and Craig, grandmothers to the same two boys, collaborated on the volume until Pearce's death in 2006.

When farmer Bonnie Bumble's crops wilt from lack of rain, she builds an animal ladder (heaving a pig atop a sheep atop a cow) and climbs up to tickle a passing cloud with chicken feathers. The ink and watercolor illustrations are a bit too saccharine, but toddlers will giggle at Bonnie's silly--and successful--plan.

In her thirteenth book, Angelina travels aboard her grandparents' canal boat, The Jolly Rat, to the Mouseland Dance Festival. Angelina cleverly evades boat work by practicing her pliés and arabesques from stem to stern. Holabird's lighthearted text and Craig's disarming illustrations make for a sweet story about intergenerational relationships.

Aspiring mouse figure-skater Angelina and friends are preparing for the New Year's Eve ice-skating show, but two bully boys keep interrupting rehearsal. The story is smoothly told, and there's no quibble with Craig's crosshatched art in decorous colors, but readers familiar with the Angelina books will be able to sniff out this tale's resolution from the first few pages.

Mouse Angelina eagerly awaits the May Day Fair--until her parents tell her she must take along her younger cousin, Henry. The story's denouement is weak (Angelina has a change of heart after Henry gets lost). But like most Angelina books, this will be savored not for its plot but for the dainty detailed illustrations in muted pastel hues.

While playing house in a hollow tree, Rosy hosts a crowd of visitors, including a rabbit, a stuffed bear, and some diminutive fairies. After her guests depart, Rosy returns to her "real" home for supper. Not a lot happens in this simple story of a young child's imaginative play, but the detailed, pastel-colored illustrations lend the pleasant story an appropriately old-fashioned air.

On their camping trip to the Big Cat Mountains, Angelina the dancing mouse and her cousin Henry get lost in the woods. They brave it out through darkness, a storm, and, by their own estimates, a near brush with Big Cat. While not terribly original, the story has drama, adventure, and a cozy ending. Newcomers and Angelina fans alike will be charmed by Holabird's spunky heroine and Craig's delicate illustrations.

One Saturday, the rain washes out the color blue from the sky, which in turn tints Bonnie Bumble's farm and animals. Bonnie's solution? She grabs a brush and some paint and restores the natural hues, and the corny denouement occurs when Bonnie's dog appears covered with multicolored paint. Preschoolers will be amused by this slight tale and by Craig's cartoony illustrations, both of which verge on the precious.

Tired of her little sister's copying, Angelina won't let her duplicate her firefly Halloween costume and instead dresses Polly as a ghost. After mistaking another little ghost for Polly and panicking about her missing sister, the young mouse develops a new tolerance for her tag-along sibling. The detailed artwork, which includes both large spreads and diminutive vignettes, will please Angelina's devoted fans.

On Friday, Bonnie Bumble's rooster loses his "cock-a-doodle-doo," until she finds him a dialogue balloon hanging from a clothing line. On Monday, her pussy willows--depicted as kittens blooming on a tree--make such a racket that the other farm animals grow annoyed. These one-joke stories are pleasant enough, but both the writing and ink and watercolor illustrations tend toward the precious.
