Ginger Green, Playdate Queen series.
Illustrated by
Jon Davis.
In these early chapter books, fox Ginger handles playdate obstacles, including friends who don't play nice. Ginger navigates sticky social situations with grace by providing examples of fair play. One of Ginger's friends is described as "crazy," when rowdy or rule-breaking would have been a more apt description. Davis's monochromatic purple illustrations capture the energy and conflict of each playdate. Glos. Review covers these Ginger Green, Playdate Queen titles: The Clever Friend, The Crazy Friend, The Fancy Friend, and The Only Friend.

Benny's family's baked knishes sell like hotcakes on New York's Lower East Side, but then the Tisches move in across the street with their fried knishes. A knish competisch ensues: prices drop, stores expand, and each proprietor hires musicians; the noise level becomes so bad that the mayor gets involved. Lively drawings show the early-twentieth-century street clogged with eager knish consumers. Knish recipes appended.

A bear family gets cozy inside its snug home during a cold winter evening. Shared experiences reinforce the tight family bond: the cubs sip hot chocolate, have storytime, and play in "soft and secret quilted lairs" while Daddy Bear folds laundry and bakes cookies and Mama lazes by the fire. Light rhymes and warm, loose-lined illustrations capture the comforting routines.

You've heard that if you do such-and-such with your face it will stay that way? Such is the fate of a brat named Cecily who likes to mockingly stick out her tongue. Several rhymes almost reach Seussian heights, but after the first few hyper-exaggerated illustrations of Cecily with a bird on her protruding tongue, the visual humor tips to unsettling.

"The Blooz" (a hulking but adorable blue monster) shows up at a child's door uninvited and makes itself at home. Ignoring, threatening, and interrogating it ("Is your sweater itchy? Do you miss my mom?") don't help, so the child resorts to playing with Blooz. This is a tender, considerate look at sadness, with quietly playful digital paintings.
