Oversize dog Tiny has many friends--but cat Kiki won't give him the time of day, despite Tiny's best efforts one snowy afternoon. When Kiki gets stuck in a tree, though, Tiny comes to the rescue. Narrated by Tiny's little-boy owner (Eliot, from previous Tiny books), the text, aimed at the newest readers, is simple yet satisfying. Davis's illustrations convey the many personalities.

Tiny, a friendly, oversize dog, needs to brush up on "sit," "stay," and "shake," so his boy owner takes him back to Happy Dog School. The accessible vocabulary, large type, short sentences, and emotive art on clean pages work well for beginning readers, who will enjoy the comically large dog's behavioral shift when the teacher arrives with a bag of "Doggie num-nums."

Tiny, the huge dog from Meister's easy-reader series, makes his picture book debut. Tiny and his owner Eliot search for a missing cat and her new kittens on Uncle John's farm. Unfussy illustrations provide visual clues to support the simple, linear plot. Short sentences and word repetition will appeal to preschoolers.

A simple, breathless text has a group of firefighters responding to a bell, donning their gear, racing to put out a fire, and saving a little boy's dog from the blaze. The book would be mundane but for its painterly illustrations, which show the men to be human beings as well as heroes (e.g., one tickles a sleeping colleague).

A boy and a girl bemoan the mess a pack of cats is making in their home and shoo them out, only to miss them once they are gone. The rhyming text features short sentences with a lot of repetition yet a varied and interesting vocabulary. Defined by a thin, shaky outline that echoes and emphasizes the story's chaos, the illustrations are humorous and appropriately frenetic.

With less exuberance, but the same kind of simple, linear plot and short sentences that characterized the previous books, the large dog, Tiny, and his young owner step outside for a romp in the snow. The boy loses track of his canine companion, and, while the cheerful illustrations reassure readers that Tiny is indeed close by, the young boy is skeptical until a joyous Tiny appears with a big, wet, slurping kiss.

Tiny the dog and his owner visit the library, where Tiny peers in through the windows while the young narrator peruses the shelves. Later, Tiny helps haul home a heavy wagonload of books. The short sentences, generous amounts of white space, and the artwork's visual clues for deciphering the text make this third book about the huge dog beginning-reader-friendly.

A boy tells of his large dog, Tiny, who is dirty and needs a bath. In this book for the least sophisticated beginning readers, each sentence appears on a single line, and only one sentence appears on a page. Illustrations mirror text, providing clues that support readers as they decipher both words and events. Add Tiny to the roll call of great dogs in children's literature. He may just wind up being a young reader's best friend.

Tiny, a light brown, slightly more petite version of Clifford the Big Red Dog, fit his name when he was a puppy, but now he's large enough to do things, both good and not so good, that he couldn't do when he was small. The affection between a boy and his pet comes through in a minimum of words and bright, spunky cartoon illustrations.
