One egg gives the animals a run for their money by rolling throughout the farm--before hitting the wall of a shed and cracking. The bilingual text is uneven; some of the Spanish includes difficult or incorrect vocabulary words. Energetic cartoony illustrations add humor. A "Hatching an Egg" / "Rompiendo el cascarón" craft activity is appended.

Lucy, a quiet girl with six rambunctious brothers, escapes to the peace of the library. When the librarian gives her a special book, Lucy uses it to calm her noisy brothers. Short sentences and simple dialogue make this story, with cartoonish illustrations, engaging. Superfluous reading questions and activities follow the text.

When Beth, a pig, can't fit her hooves into her red cowboy boots, she relies on her friends to help solve the problem. Her five animal friends volunteer their boots, but each donated pair is not quite right. In the end, her friends team up to find her the perfect pair. Although the story is somewhat unsatisfying, the simple premise has appeal, and Ernst's lighthearted illustrations will help readers decipher the text.

A mother and her daughter enjoy a cheerful day at the beach. The young girl meets a new friend, and together they build sandcastles, decorate themselves with shells and seaweed, and jump in the waves. The rhyming text and simple illustrations rendered in warm colors combine to convey a relaxed, lighthearted day at the seashore.

While looking through the house for Tiger the cat, a girl uncovers--sometimes literally--each of her other pets instead. Although the story in this beginning reader is minimal, young readers will delight in pointing out the clues to Tiger's whereabouts and seeing the other animals appear one by one in the comic drawings.

A pink hen chases an errant, non-hatching egg as it rolls through the farmyard, adding other animals to the chase as they go. Though there's no good reason provided for the egg's elusiveness, energetic, cartoony illustrations and repetitious elements ("Pig couldn't catch it, so he ran too. The egg kept going") will attract early readers.
