This reissue of Banks's exciting fairy story concerns a childless couple and the tiny fairy who defies the fairy queen to help the couple have a baby. The queen's revenge threatens the child, Bindi, but the good fairies triumph in the end. The infrequent black-and-white line drawings don't add much to the story, but Banks's well-constructed and varied tale can stand on its own.

(4) 4-6 Illustrated by William Geldart. The story of Black Beauty is presented here unabridged, supplemented by color drawings and heavily captioned archival reproductions. The drawings are bland, and the captions are occasionally irrelevant or intrusive, but the historical art helpfully shows the bearing rein and other tack and equipages referred to in the text.

(4) YA Whole Story series. Illustrated by William Geldart. Historical notes, small color photographs, and illustrations in the margins, along with a few double-page spreads offering more information, supplement the text of Dickens's classic holiday tale about generosity. The additional notes add to the crowded format and are by no means comprehensive, but provide some interesting facts. The watercolor sketches are of average quality.
