Lucille gets her chance (by mistake) when she stumbles into a race at the county fair. She soon tires, but the cheering crowd inspires her to finish. Humorous realistic illustrations support the book's never-give-up-on-your-dream message.

In an overly long text, Ben resents having to look after Allison after school, but when he helps her solve some of her problems, he discovers that having a little sister may not be so bad after all. Ally's difficulties in the midst of a snowball fight and her ballet-costume dilemma ring true. However, the illustrations of the characters are inconsistent in quality.

(4) K-3 Illustrated by Dean Griffiths. When Loon Lake holds a fishing derby, entrepreneurial Wally starts selling worms. But things quickly get out of hand as floods of fishermen descend and hordes of other worm sellers dig up gardens townside. Alliteration sometimes threatens to overwhelm the tale, but the busy watercolor illustrations bustle with a colorful cast of animal characters.

(4) K-3 When the lighthouse captain's wife brings home a Newfoundland puppy, trouble ensues. The giant dog chews on the captain's favorite slippers and eats everything in sight. During a storm, however, she earns her keep by rescuing a lost fisherman. Although somewhat awkwardly written, this tale of "what Newfies do" is told with humor and accompanied by appealing ink and watercolor illustrations.
