Brief descriptive paragraphs for each letter of the alphabet piece together the story of America's fight for independence. Familiar elements are included (C for colonies, E for England) as are lesser-known historic events and personalities (K for Battle of the Kegs, Z for Betty Zane). The accompanying illustrations are more adept at depicting landscapes than people.

Nathan sets out with Grandpa to look for a Hanukkah menorah of his own. He finally finds what he wants in an antique shop; inspired by Grandpa's tales of purchasing from peddlers years ago, Nathan procures it after a session of spirited bargaining. This warm, though wordy, story is accompanied by stiff but otherwise competent illustrations.

In the fourth book about Toby, she spends an afternoon explaining the meaning and practice of the Jewish High Holy Days to a non-Jewish friend. Although Pushker emphasizes information over story and the figures depicted in the artwork are awkward, the book covers a lot of territory smoothly and clearly. A recipe for honey cake is included.
