Double-page spreads feature eye-catching illustrations full of movement and detail; each scene focuses on a particular outdoor activity and includes other bits of relevant information. Some activities involve a specific site (boulder climbing in Alabama's Cherokee Rock Village); others are more general ("Learn to ski or snowboard" in Maine). The entries can include snippets about natural history, earth science, and Indigenous populations, as well as helpful tips: while snowshoeing in Connecticut: "If you're going down a steep hill, bend your knees and keep your weight back so you don't somersault down the slope!" "5 Adventures in Your Own Neighborhood!" and an index conclude the offering.

American Southwest storyteller Hayes retells ten folktales (five new and five from the original 1994 edition) with straightforward, often funny text in both English and Spanish. In these tales, women's cunning saves the day from people with unsavory intentions or unfortunate habits. Soft, realistic black-and-white illustrations, some new and some reused from the previous edition, open the stories. Back matter includes notes about the origins of each tale.

Unintentional Adventures of the Bland Sisters series.
Illustrated by
Jen Hill.
Sisters Kale and Jaundice Bland have barely recovered from being kidnapped by pirates when another letter from their parents arrives instructing them to meet long-lost Aunt Shallot at the train station. What follows is a madcap railroad adventure in which the girls are roped into being magician's assistants and junior detectives. Kale and Jaundice are anything but bland in this quirky, fast-paced second volume.

Unintentional Adventures of the Bland Sisters series.
Illustrated by
Jen Hill.
The Bland sisters, Jaundice and Kale, live a very ordinary life in Dullsville. But when a band of (notably, all-female) pirates captures them, they are led on an adventure they never expected. Aboard the Jolly Regina, the girls befriend the cook, learn how to stand up to bullies, write sea chanteys, and more. Stylish illustrations highlight the high jinks; a satisfying ending suggests more not-so-bland adventures to come.

In the middle of winter, Sophie is ready for spring. Her mother tells her to listen for it. Eventually, she hears the first chirps, but it's still cold and snowy. So her parents tell her to use her other senses to follow spring's progress. The book advances nicely through the change in seasons; gouache spreads of the landscape alternate with more action-filled vignettes.

Based on a true story and with illustrations evoking the era, this book follows ten-year-old Diana, who lived in the White House while her father, Harry Hopkins, was President Franklin Roosevelt's chief advisor. Diana gets into mischief until, anxious to help the war effort, she volunteers to tend the White House Victory Garden; her efforts inspire the nation. A warm story with lots of curriculum connections.

In 1917, college girl Helen Stevens joins the Woman's Land Army of America to "do her bit" for the war effort at the Women's Agricultural Camp in Bedford, New York. Hagar's homespun narrative uses invented dialogue and details to spotlight an important moment in feminist history. Hill's gouache illustrations are full of Rosie the Riveter–esque images in pastoral landscapes. Bib.

Reed and Hill explore one teen’s reaction when townspeople call for removal of his favorite fantasy series from the public library. The graphic novel format (incorporating excerpts from the fictional series) keeps the confrontations vivid, emphasizing the universality of Neil's struggle to be heard. Teens may relate to Neil, even though treatment of the censorship debate is simplistic.

This volume includes three reissues about intrepid adventurer Jane and her housekeeper: Jane's Adventures in and out of the Book (1966), Jane's Adventures on the Island of Peeg (originally Operation Peeg, 1974), and Jane's Adventures in a Balloon (1975). Though there's minimal character development, the stories are amusing and move briskly from one episode to the next.

Despite the fact that La Llorona involves a mother who, after she is betrayed by her husband, drowns her children, it remains a popular Hispanic tale. Hayes retells the story in a pedestrian fashion in both English and Spanish. This edition features some new illustrations; the art is occasionally marred by distracting crosshatching. An afterword provides background information.

This collection of fourteen poems ranges from the amusing "A Bad Bear Day" to the bittersweet "Barely Bear." Each simple poem is paired with a detailed, full-page painting featuring teddy bears engaged in various activities (sleeping, playing, etc.). The ideas expressed in both verse and illustrations aren't original but will attract die-hard teddy bear fans.
