In 1977, New York City's fire department opened its entrance exam to women, but none of the women who applied passed the physical test. One of them, Brenda Berkman, sued the FDNY for discriminatory entrance testing. After winning in court, Berkman became a firefighter--but endured cruel on-the-job discrimination for years. Hunt's expressive mixed-media illustrations and Rinker's well-shaped story effectively convey Berkman's persistence and resilience, which paved the way for future female firefighters. An author's note discusses "Modern Trailblazers," and an endnote adds biographical details. A bibliography and list of websites are appended.

Bookworm Princess Lex--who has brown skin and blue hair--has her books taken away on her fifteenth birthday. A fairy, insulted at not being invited to the celebration when Lex was born, cursed her to get a paper cut at fifteen, and...you know the rest. But like the author-illustrator pair's Interstellar Cinderella, this Sleeping Beauty takes an active role in her tale. The rhyming text cleverly involves reading at every turn. Mixed-media illustrations incorporate eye-pleasing sci-fi details.

Nine fictional sixteen-year-old girls (all good friends) at camp share personal questions, experiences, health tips, and insecurities as their bodies, relationships, and emotions change. They gather their discoveries in "The Book," intended to be passed along to next summer's twelve-year-old campers. Anecdotes, notes, diagrams, doodles, and other marginalia accompany the informal text, which emphasizes self-acceptance and kindness.

A pink-haired Cinderella dreams "of fixing fancy rockets," but she's stranded on her planetoid repairing "robot dishwashers and zoombrooms" while her stepfamily attends the Royal Space Parade...that is, until her fairy godrobot arrives. This clever rhyming retelling focuses on what Cinderella can do, not what she can wear. Mixed-media illustrations incorporate muted pinks, purples, and greens for a zippy sci-fi feel.
