(4) K-3 Illustrated by Laura Jacobsen. Her parents on Hajj pilgrimage, Aneesa spends the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha with her grandmother, who tries to cheer her with special foods and presents. When she meets a refugee family, Aneesa plans a special gift for them. The text is sentimental but informative. Pastel pencil drawings showcase Aneesa's emotions. (3) K-3 Illustrated by Laura Jacobsen. Ostensibly narrated by the subject's brother, this fictional reminiscence affectionately describes the life of Vermont farm boy-turned-scientist Willie Bentley. Consumed by a passion for snowflakes, Willie devoted himself to photographing their ephemeral beauty, often with homemade aids. Saturated black-outlined, warm-toned pastel images deftly illustrate the accomplished text.
