Here's a handsomely designed version (slightly updated) of the favorite tale by an illustrator who draws and paints with equal artistry and skill. With superb use of color, the dramatic action is shown chiefly in half-page pictures, while the serene forest scenes overspread two pages and give the volume a definitive atmosphere. It's a book of considerable beauty.

In these two books, one a reissue and one a new story, the affable West Highland terrier upholds his reputation for being charming, if not perfectly behaved. Colorful details, such as the vibrant illustrations' 1940s' setting and the texts' inclusion of props like the "Handy Dandy Foldaway Baby Emergency Travel Kit," make these tales of McDuff's misadventures all the more distinctive. Review covers these titles: McDuff Saves the Day and McDuff's Wild Romp.

In this reissue the peppy Westie gets a lesson in obedience and language from the new French neighbors and their well-behaved Scottish terrier. The lighthearted comedy of manners doesn't hold many surprises but ends on a companionable note. McDuff is comfortably his old expressive self, especially in Jeffers's unadorned illustrations, many of which provide a terrier's-eye view. Glos.

It's 1942, and William is considered too little to do war work like his family. He settles for "peace work" and gives a gift of fresh-picked blueberries to Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, who is temporarily living in Massachusetts. Based on a true event, the story captures a child's sense of longing to prove his worth, and Jeffers's art ably transforms him into the knight he dreams of being.

This reissue of Jeffers's illustrated interpretation of the familiar Christmas carol is a respectful and reverent treatment of the Christmas story. The oversize book has room for tall, stately angels and a wide view of Bethlehem painted in tones of blue and gray and framed in gold.

"S is for Shadow. / Wherever she goes, / A little gray kitten / Plays with her toes." Jeffers's appealing, detailed illustrations of Miss Rosie the orange tabby accompany this alphabet book's rhyming text. Pictures and text work well together to depict Rosie's small adventures as she explores her new home and yard after being rescued from an alley by a little girl.

When Fred and Lucy go for an outing with their baby and little dog McDuff, ants steal their picnic. The afternoon looks bleak until McDuff finds Mr. DiMaggio all alone with too much food. Although the idea of ants carrying off sandwiches is a little far-fetched, McDuff's endearing character and the appealing illustrations setting the story in the 1940s give the story style.

Four previously unpublished poems by Margaret Wise Brown have been gathered and illustrated as a picture book that features a little bear during each of the four seasons. Unfortunately, the quiet, gentle poems are sometimes overwhelmed by Jeffers's large, handsome paintings of a little bear and his parents exploring the world.

This chapter book edition of Wells's and Jeffers's picture book offers their retelling of the classic story in a smaller format. Wells's text remains the same, while Jeffers's illustrations, printed here in black and white, are fewer in number and reduced in size. The illustrations don't have the same impact as the larger originals, but the smaller trim size and chapter divisions should recommend this to independent readers.

In this edition of the well-loved and award-winning novel, the art both decorates and extends the text. But as Wells trims Field's prose and adds plot and character to make the story more active, Hitty loses her distinctive voice and her place as the story's primary subject. Better that readers return to the pleasures of Field's original Hitty.

During a Christmas Eve blizzard, McDuff the terrier hears night noises and repeatedly wakes his family to go out. Finally, they discover Santa, stuck in the garage, looking for a shovel. The book, appealing to both young children and adults, has cozy paintings that have an underlying humor and are as spunky as dear McDuff.
