Glimpses at the usual suspects (Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony) mingle with profiles of less commonly covered women, such as Jovita Idár and Inez Milholland. (3) YA Illustrated by Maira Kalman. Another collaboration uniting photographs from MoMA with Kalman's paintings and Handler's text (Girls Standing on Lawns) is centered on--you guessed it--weather. But Handler's text also delves deeper, each tiny prose poem interpreting theme-fitting images on an emotional human level: "It's like summer. It's like doing nothing. Delicious." (1) YA Illustrated by Maira Kalman. Min is a quirky aspiring filmmaker; Ed’s a popular jock. Their breakup centers this unique novel, posed as a letter Min is writing to Ed. She’s also planning to leave a box of items--tiny tokens of their relationship--on his doorstep. Min's narration is poetic, eloquent, and honest. Kalman’s spare illustrations perfectly complement Handler's accomplished prose, and thick glossy pages make the book satisfyingly hefty.

(3) K-3 Illustrated by Maira Kalman. Snicket spins out a story from thirteen main words, starting with "1: Bird" and ending with "13: Mezzo-Soprano." A bird is despondent ("Word Number 2"). His friend Dog tries to cheer him up with cake and a new hat from the "9: Haberdashery." Kalman's artistry adds panache ("Word Number 12") to the lighthearted yet layered story of friendship and vocabulary-boosting.
