Malaspina sets the scene in Revolutionary War–era America, beginning with George Washington leading "his ragged Continental Army." She then shifts to the life of African American poet (and former slave) Wheatley, culminating in her sending a tribute poem to Washington and having him read it. The text is a little choppy, but the events, shown in vivid oil paintings, are engaging. Reading list.

This vignette depicts a childhood incident in which a foreman whipped Harriet Tubman after she picked and ate an apple--an event that may have served as a catalyst in the life of the Underground Railroad leader. The illustrations present far too pristine a picture of slave life on a plantation, but the slight story is an accessible introduction to Tubman.

An adoring mother speaks to her toddler in a lyrical outpouring of love: "My heart / skips uh bop for you." Realistic illustrations from a variety of perspectives, including some effective close-ups, show the two cuddling, playing, and dancing. The book may have more appeal for adults, but it presents opportunities for parent/child interaction ("I wanna squeeze ya") that young listeners may enjoy.

This easy chapter book features three friends and a seemingly invulnerable villain: the eponymous Tippy Lemmey, new dog in town and terror of the neighborhood. The 1951 small-town-Tennessee setting is evoked naturally through the action, which is constant. This is a terrific read-aloud, but why bother? Get Tippy Lemmey into one kid's hands and it will be a pass-it-on hit.
