Gossip fiend Hen overhears a conversation between Cow and Pig and shares with Duck what she (thinks she) heard ("Sadie the dog has a thorn!"). Duck passes it along to Goose ("Daisy the cat grew a horn!"), and so on in this funny story. The creative collage and mixed-media illustrations feature befuddled farm animals bent on retaining their dignity.

Sid the snake panics when he begins to molt, until his mother explains he's not sick but growing. He then happily shows off his new rattle to his friends. Though the book is unnecessarily split into two chapters, the text's word repetition will encourage new readers, while bright pastel illustrations will keep them engaged. Superfluous reading questions and activities are appended.

"Tell me, of what do you dream?" is the question posed in turn to a series of animate and inanimate objects in this picture book whose circular structure celebrates the interconnectedness of the natural world. While the girl is stiffly rendered, there's a peacefulness to the simple, repetitive text that's mirrored in the impressionistic landscapes.

Sumi has only just learned her first English words this morning ("Hello, what is your name?" and "My name is Sumi"). But thanks to a nice teacher, Sumi begins to negotiate her new environment. With a gentle but realistic hand, Pak takes Sumi on her first steps from understandable trepidation toward a sense of ease in this new place. Illustrator Kim depicts Sumi in large, soft-edged swatches of confidently bright colors.

As night advances, a mother and child observe the various animals--such as moths, bats, and owls--that take wing outside their window: "Whose wings? / Firefly's wings, / Glimmer, glow, and hide." The gently rhymed and repetitive text, along with the bold, lushly colored illustrations printed on sturdy paper, make this an appealing and age-appropriate choice for toddlers at bedtime.

"Ducks' Ditty," from 'The Wind in the Willows', is given new life in this pleasingly illustrated board book. Kim's rich and textured paintings are filled with bird's-eye views of upended duck tails, an amusing perspective that might take a while for the youngest to recognize. However, the warmth of the artwork and the rhythm of the poem should help make it accessible to this young audience.
