Buhrman-Deever imagines the relationships between predators and prey as poetic standoffs. Animal antagonists express their behaviors and needs in a variety of creative poetic formats. Content and cadence are cleverly aligned with the actual behaviors of the animals, and the structure and layouts of the poems also echo traits of the creatures. Illustrations are in soft focus, with stippled green and brown landscapes. Bib.

Working from the original Grimms' tales, Orgel provides six fresh, lively retellings that will be a particular boon to storytellers. Kitchen's elegantly detailed animals are strongly realistic, yet imbued with character, dignity, and a beguiling whiff of humor. A beautifully designed book, this makes a grand introduction to the Grimms.

Bert Kitchen's acclaimed animal studies are showcased in this large-format collection of mostly familiar fables. Orgel's retellings, pithy and distinctively voiced, lack the concluding proverbs, which may worry those who prefer a moral tacked on to the end but which allows young listeners to come to their own conclusions. Each double-page spread is accompanied by a (frequently irrelevant) boxed fact about Aesop.

It's Christmas on an Antarctica-bound ship, and Tom must find a quiet place for his pet, Little Rabbit, to build a nest. After a long search, Little Rabbit beds down and delivers a Christmas surprise--seventeen babies. The story is a bit slight, but the textured illustrations provide a vivid glimpse of shipboard life. An author's note on the endpapers gives additional information about the real voyage on which the story is based.
