In this new, refurbished edition (intended for publication in 1964), the Plaza's infamous six-year-old resident is still enchantingly self-absorbed and out of control. Knight's signature black-and-white line drawings, here accented with blue in addition to the classic red and pink, have lost none of their verve, wit, and panache. Thompson may have pulled the plug in 1964, but fans will be grateful for her relatives' decision to start the faucet running again.

While the text is the traditional Christmas song, the illustrations show Benjamin Bear wooing his beloved Bedelia with dozens and dozens of gifts. Cutaways of Bedelia's house reveal how she copes with all the presents, finally creating a special Christmas fair with them on the fold-out last page. While the illustrations have many amusing details, Benjamin and Bedelia's story is sometimes hard to follow.

Knight imagines Lear's nonsense verse about the romance between a seafaring Owl and Pussy-cat as an elaborately staged story that the theatrically inclined Professor Comfort involves his company in. As the Professor reads the verses, his young guests, an owlish boy and a kittenish girl, transform into the fowl and feline of the verse. Detailed watercolor and pencil pictures exude charm and energy.

Reissued with a new jacket, this small, perfectly child-sized gathering of poems follows a boy through a day of birthday preparation and celebration. Authors of the sixteen short poems include Dr. Seuss, Aileen Fisher, and Myra Cohn Livingston. Knight's typically exuberant watercolor and pen pictures provide a dose of high spirits just right for the festivities.

Eloise heads north in a book first published during the Cold War. Setting their usual frantic pace, Eloise and Nanny tour Moscow. Most kids probably won't get the jokes about Russia, but adults who love "this absolutely darling little sweetnik" will find her adventures amusing, even if they are un-p.c. Pen-and-ink drawings use gold instead of Knight's usual pink.

This omnibus edition contains the four titles featuring the six-year-old terror of the Plaza Hotel: Eloise (1955), Eloise in Paris (1957), Eloise at Christmastime (1958), and Eloise in Moscow (1959). The rather daunting volume includes biographical information on both Thompson and Knight. Universally disdained by the children's literature establishment, the Eloise books nonetheless have an enormous and devoted following.

Two books have been combined into one "flip-flop" volume, and Knight has hand-colored the original drawings with watercolor and pencil. Zolotow's girl and boy muse about the things their own children will be allowed to do (such as have new crayons even if the old ones are "still good and just not pointed anymore").

The Plaza Hotel's precocious enfant terrible makes a spirited reappearance in this second of the Eloise books. Humorous, often caricatured pen-and-ink drawings and a text peppered with French phrases perfectly capture the ebullient Eloise's excellent adventure.

Exuberant, effusive Eloise prepares to welcome Christmas Day at the Plaza Hotel with "trinkles and sklinkles of glee." Holiday hijinks include spying on frolicking guests and bestowing presents on hotel employees. Hilary Knight's line drawings race and bounce across the page, keeping pace with the madcap energy of the text. Some new illustrations have been added.
