"What if...all the words in the universe disappeared? / Then we would invent a whole new language." Dotlich presents eight other intense "What if...?" scenarios that provoke thought, entertain, and, as a bonus, may offer reassurance for high-anxiety young readers. Playing out the hypothetical scenes in Koehler's mixed-media art are two polar bears who navigate their boat through a comfortingly cartoonish Arctic setting.

A trio of kids sets off from a treehouse to explore a backyard with a flashlight. Digitally colored pencil drawings show the realistic elements of the backyard in the darker parts of the picture, while the beam of light emitted from the flashlight reveals all sorts of imaginative settings: a pirate ship; an Egyptian tomb. It's an old-fashioned, rip-roaring imaginary adventure.

Baby and Puppy love each other and can't stand to be separated, even though Mommy and Daddy could clearly use a reprieve from the double trouble. Short, repetitive sentences highlight the word puppy in a simple story about the bond between a young child and pet. Only Koehler's giggle-inducing digital illustrations show the mayhem the adorable pair creates for the exhausted but doting parents.

A dragon-dismissive mouse gives readers a direct-address tour of what looks like a sinister forest full of signs of dragon life ("That is NOT A DRAGON. That is a...rabbit"). The digitally assembled art employs crumpled paper with burn marks, producing a ravaged dragon-filled landscape that will entrance some young readers but may daunt those led to expect lighthearted silliness throughout this meta-tale.

Pictures and design dance together to illuminate these seemingly bare-bones stories. "One day...I went to school. I came home. The end." But a double-page illustration shows that our pigtailed storyteller was late for school, her science experiment exploded, and ice cream redeemed the day. The pictures convey mood by gesture, color, and composition. The final episode reveals the overall narrative: how Pigtail Girl discovers herself as a writer.
