(3) K-3 Illustrated by Susan Estelle Kwas. Kaleb takes his usual spot in the cart while grocery shopping with his mom. Through a series of far-fetched events, Kaleb's cart rolls out of the parking lot and through the streets of town. Kaleb has the time of his life and eventually returns safely to his unsuspecting mother. The bright, bold, angular illustrations heighten the humor of this cumulative adventure.

The activities of wild birds near a girl's home are described from spring through winter (e.g., "Sometimes they stay / and share this yard, / this tree with you"). While not meant as a guide book, some of the birds appearing in the generally realistic illustrations are identified on a double-page spread preceding the book's lyrical but dull verse.

(4) K-3 Illustrated by Susan Estelle Kwas. From the crinkle of a potato chip bag to the hush of falling snow, these verses highlight the sounds around us. Varying fonts and type sizes, setting onomatopoeic words apart from the rest of the words, are paired with energetic illustrations. While some of the rhymes are forced, there are ample choices in this collection for reading aloud.

Bulla's informative and entertaining guide to the holiday of romance (first published in St. Valentine's Day) here receives fresh treatment--jazzy color-saturated illustrations with a touch of the abstract and a handsome book design. In addition to facts about the holiday's history and customs, directions for making cookies and valentines are included.
