Fox, Weasel, and Wolf decide to steal a turkey for their Christmas feast--but things don't turn out as planned. Turkey scolds and bullies her "captors" into straightening up the burrow, wiping their paws before they enter, gathering materials for Christmas decorations, etc. Meanwhile, though the hapless trio claims they are waiting to fatten her up before they turn her into dinner, she's cooking delicious meals and making their house into a home--which, it turns out, they enjoy. While decidedly not a new story, this one is notable for the liveliness of its telling and the humor (particularly in the body language of bossy Turkey and cowed trio) and child-pleasing detail in its illustrations.

A girl makes crude but cheerful drawings to create a story about Hero and Heroine's Conflict with Evil Overlord, while an unseen narrator remarks on (and critiques) her use of story elements ("What kind of action is that?"). This introduction to how stories work is full of humor, but a "friendly" glossary confuses matters by introducing terms not in the text.

Bedtime is tough for a little boy who can't fall asleep. After tossing and turning, he tries to sleep with various animal friends, but nothing helps. Songwriter Weinstone's repetitive rhyming text is accompanied by engaging illustrations in calming hues. A web link provides a free download of Weinstone singing the lyrics, which may make the bland test more pleasant to listen to.

Left in charge, a father does his best with an unfamiliar routine as his daughter complains: "that's not how Mom does it. With Mom, the table is always set just right. And she makes the potatoes extra creamy." The story's implied parental dynamic veers toward stereotype, but Dad's patience and love is evidenced on every page in the straightforward text and amusing illustrations.

A cab-driving city cat decides to hop a plane with some visiting jungle animals and have an adventure. He enjoys "the wild" until he becomes homesick. The home-sweet-home story is familiar, and many of the rhymes fail to scan properly. However, readers will take to the art, whose busy anthropomorphized animals call to mind Richard Scarry's cast.
