Colandro combines cumulative-rhyme silliness with slight undersea-creature facts in an entertaining if sometimes confusing easy reader; an appended spread provides more scientific detail ("Sharks can go through up to 30,000 teeth in their lifetime!" "Sea stars do not have a brain or blood"). Busily textured illustrations show a bespectacled, pink-skinned mermaid-of-a-certain-age eagerly swallowing the various creatures.

Black Lagoon Adventures series.
Illustrated by

Each slight entry in the long-running series revolves around one of neurotic narrator Hubie's exaggerated fears or insecurities, which he overcomes in bizarre and unexpected ways. Abundant pen drawings accompany the brief chapters, accenting the absurdities with snakes, spiders, "cooties," and other creepy creatures commenting from the margins. There are five other spring 2017 books in this series. Review covers these Black Lagoon Adventures titles: The Amusement Park from the Black Lagoon, The Class Picture Day from the Black Lagoon, Friday the 13th from the Black Lagoon, The Summer Camp from the Black Lagoon, and Trick or Treat from the Black Lagoon.

Using a "House That Jack Built" structure, this book describes how various witches, vampires, and ghosts contribute to the (shoddy) construction of a "spooky" house, and the resultant chaos when trick-or-treaters come to the door. There's good read-aloud potential here (although the verse's meter may require practice), and the pen-and-ink illustrations are frenetically funny.

When Pluto learns that astronomers have changed his status to dwarf planet, he's furious and races down to earth. The scientists explain their new definition to him, but it takes a child reassuring him that he's still special to send him home happy. Although facts about the solar system are included, the story, accompanied by sketchlike cartoon illustrations, is weak.

Stepping Stone series.
Illustrated by
Jared Lee.
When Stevie arrives for his first summer at Camp Viper, he's in for a horrible surprise: it's not a Viper computer software camp, it's a snake camp! Quick thinking allows him to pass off an imaginary snake pal for a while, until a friendly Smooth Green Snake changes his attitude. The plot is thin, but in general the short chapters, illustrated with Lee's well-matched humorous cartoons, are funny.

Derivations of both common words and proper names are included in this alphabetically arranged volume. The pithy text reveals that the word sofa comes from a cushion used for riding on a camel's back and that yo-yo is a Tagalog phrase for come-come. Illustrated with comical black-and-white art, the book also explains the origins of state names, many car models, and several sports teams. Bib., ind.
