In this Swiss import, Peter, Wendy, Tink, Hook, and the crew have the appearance of somewhat sketchlike paper dolls; the "Redskins," including Tiger Lily (with feathered headdress and rosy cheeks), are all smiles throughout. Individually, the images have some appeal, but as a whole they're a little cutesy for the novel's darker themes.

A troubled bear approaches various humans for help, but each tells him what's wrong with him (he needs a scarf, glasses, etc.) before he can state his case (he's afraid of the dark). The humor in the textual repetitions and the illustrations of the bear's interrupters in their well-appointed work environments are a pleasure.

This collection of thirteen stories, originally published in Austria, includes familiar Andersen tales ("The Ugly Duckling," "The Little Match Girl") and a few lesser-known ones (e.g., "There Is No Doubt"). The stories are faithfully retold if a bit overlong and literal. Droll delicate-lined paintings and spot art decorate the pages. Cursory information about Andersen's life is appended.
