(4) 4-6 Chronicles of the Low Realm series. Illustrated by Tom Lintern. After the impressive feat of pulling Ratscalibur, the legendary Spork, from the Scone, human-boy-turned-hero-rat Joey is sent on a quest to save the Kingdom Ravalon. Lieb borrows from classic legends and Tolkien with abandon; it's all a bit over-the-top, but the fast pace keeps the plot moving and Joey is a likable reluctant hero. Black-and-white drawings enhance Joey's heroic adventures.

(4) K-3 Illustrated by Tom Lintern. The Tooth Fairy and her counterpart, mouse El Ratón Pérez, argue over Miguelito's tooth, which sparkles brightly in Lintern's illustrations. Ultimately, the two learn to work together and share the tooth. Colato Laínez's tale is message-y (honor your heritage; cooperate with others) but entertaining. The back matter about the folkloric figures is engaging. Spanish words appear throughout the text. Glos.

(4) K-3 Illustrated by Tom Lintern. With promises of pretty snow, frozen lakes, and glamorous icy crowns, the Cold Water Witch tries to trick a little girl into taking her place in a frozen land. The clever child catches on and instead releases from frozen enchantment a girl not unlike herself. Lacy whites and purples set the chilly scene for this slight folklore-inspired tale.
