A bandicoot named Hunwick finds an egg and cares for it while waiting for it to hatch. The egg never does hatch--Hunwick discovers that it is really a stone--but Hunwick comes to love it as it is. The somewhat melancholy story is suitably paired with delicate, fine-lined illustrations.
