Out to sea in a boat, a mother vows to keep her boy safe, the captain vows to keep them both safe, and a star vows to guide them. Back home, the boy pledges to catch the star if it falls. The childlike question-and-response text paired with night-hued illustrations of a storm-tossed sea and a cozy coastal town make this cycle of care a comforting lullaby.

Although Bear tells Bug she's too tired to play, Bug relentlessly pursues her. Finally Bear explodes, "Go and jump in a lake!" As Bear tries to sleep, she worries that she should have been nicer. She goes to find Bug--who's stuck in the middle of the lake--and rescues him. Playful mixed-media illustrations add interest to the bland story.

At bedtime, Button the bear worries that his dreams will be scary. "Should I give you something nice to think about...?" Daddy asks, and he tells Button about a most wonderful day: the day his cub was born. In this soothing bedtime story, Button is an appealing brown bear living in a gentle forest of warm greens and browns.

Otto the otter can do lots of things, including "slippery-rock hopping" and "being kind to frogs," but he just can't swim. His sister finally helps him with the advice to "start small." Marlow's animals are endearing; a springtime palette of blues and greens with plenty of white space displays a close-knit riverbank community.

A mouse family prepares for Santa's arrival. From decorating the tree and making a snack to the anxious little ones' inability to sleep, the details lack originality. With a nod to Moore's classic Christmas poem, some of Mitton's rhymes are clever, others forced. Marlow's cheerful and varied illustrations play up the mouse-size perspective of events.
