With every change, scaredy-cat Friday hides. When he finally comes out, he meets Angela, the new cat, and realizes change can be exciting. The plot is super-slim, but textual repetition and tension-filled illustrations will appeal to beginning readers.

Goofy-looking Friday the black cat is proud of his fangs but scared of things like thunder, lightning, doorbells, and car horns, all of which make him jump, run, and hide. He's not afraid of ghosts at all, but ghosts are scared of scaredy-cat Friday. Humorous, off-kilter illustrations enliven the somewhat random story line.

(3) K-3 Illustrated by Maddy McClellan. A princess, her best friend, and a small bird love language. When her friend moves away, the princess's sadness affects all the birds in the garden. Although the larger birds try to help, it's the smallest one who is best able to comfort her with his collected words promising friendship and cheer. Colorful mixed-media illustrations nicely incorporate the words and their moods.
