Dixie, her dog, wants to help but continually just makes a mess. At Emma's final good-deeds stop, it's Dixie to the rescue (as usual) when she needs a hand. Simple language and lively illustrations round out this upbeat early reader.

(4) K-3 I Can Read Book series. Illustrated by Sarah McConnell. Becky teases Emma in front of Becky's friends. Emma's dog, Dixie, wants to comfort her human, so Dixie sneaks into school. When Dixie runs into Becky accidentally and other kids laugh, Becky realizes how she made Emma feel and the two girls become friends. Although the resolution is predictable, the easy-to-read text and bright illustrations capture Emma and Dixie's loving friendship.

Some unintentional mischief-making ensues, but Dixie does her best to behave--and she shines as Toto alongside Emma in the play. Spirited illustrations capture the exuberance of the eager puppy.

In an act of exuberance, oh-so-friendly Dixie accidentally sets two birds free. When the whole class tries without success to recapture them, Dixie comes to the rescue. Expressive, lively illustrations pair well with the accessible, child-friendly text.
