(2) PS Illustrated by Tim Miller. An egg tumbles down a mountain and lands beside another egg. The jostling causes them both to hatch, one after the other. First out comes Duckie, wide-eyed, loquacious, and looking for a friend. Then there's Snaps, a crocodile who'd just as soon beat it: "Well...Goodbye!" Duckie lays out a convincing case for staying to play, but just as Snaps seems ready to relent, an adult-looking croc comes by: "No. You cannot be friends" because "We. EAT. Duckies!" Snaps is confused: "I had no idea! I JUST GOT HERE!" After some hysterics on everyone's part, a creative culinary solution leads to the promise of lasting friendship and appetite satisfaction (fun fact: crocodiles do eat fruit). Speech bubble-heavy text with thoughtful use of repetition enhances comprehension and enjoyment. Digitally colored pen-and-ink illustrations (a mix of scene-setting introductory spreads, varied panels, and single pages) feature crisp black lines, bold hues, and slapstick-y interactions between an unlikely duo -- who, in terms of friendship, turn out to be very lucky ducks.

(3) K-3 Illustrated by Tim Miller. Reminiscent of Elephant & Piggie books in both comedic style and cartoon illustrations, an all-dialogue story centers on two very different animals, who learn (eventually) that not everyone is like them. The hilarious mix-up between a horse (a "very big dog," to Dog) and a dog (a "tiny baby horse," to Horse) stays fresh throughout the entire book.

The wacky chicken from Snappsy the Alligator is narrating again, and this time he's buttering Snappsy up: the chicken has big plans for their Best Friends Sleepover, but Snappsy would prefer a quiet night alone. Underneath the entertaining odd-couple clashing lies a (semi-)serious point about taking a chance on friendship. Miller's cartoony art harbors sly jokes that reward attentive viewers.

(2) K-3 Illustrated by Tim Miller. This is a book-length sparring match between exasperated alligator Snappsy and an offstage storyteller-foil who criticizes Snappsy and ignores his pleas to scram. Falatko's ability to sustain the tension at length; Miller's savory palette; and the unvoiced suggestion that when fiction is working well, a character can take on a life of his or her own all serve this meta-story well.
