"I HATE MY NAME!" complains Thunder Boy Smith Jr., a.k.a. Little Thunder: a nickname that "makes me sound like a burp or a fart." As he considers new names, the pictures let us into his world and his dreams. The book is both funny and real, and Morales's illustrations (made from "the remains of an antique house") give the family great specificity.

In 1939, O'Keeffe was commissioned by the Hawaiian Pineapple Company (later Dole) to tour Hawaii and create promotional paintings of the exotic fruit. But she fell in love with other features of the islands--volcanoes, tropical flora, rare coral--and stubbornly wouldn't "be told what to paint." Novesky's lulling prose is matched by Morales's elegant, paradisiacal acrylics inspired by O'Keeffe's art. Reading list.

One night, young Suhaila meets her loving grandmother (who has died), and they climb a ladder to the moon. From there, they reach down to Earth, connecting with people of various cultures and helping those in trouble. Memorable art, full of rounded, powerful human figures, illustrates this abstract teaching tale in which the story line is primarily a vehicle for the (worthy) message.

When Anita's mom sings she floats in the air, and everyone who hears her floats as well. The neighbors complain, Mama stops singing, and then things go bad with the village animals. Anita discovers a secret about her grandmother that solves the problem. Morales's incandescent illustrations support Lacámara's lovely text, an exercise in Latin American magical realism for picture book readers.

A boy describes his abuelita's daily routine as she prepares for work. The confusing but lyrical text, deftly incorporating some Spanish words, leads to the story's big reveal: Abuelita is a storyteller. Aptly, Johnston's wordplay provides opportunities for storytellers as a lively read-aloud. Morales's unique mixed-media illustrations (clay, wire, wood, acrylic, etc.) were photographed and computer manipulated.

This book weaves Spanish words into an English poem, defining the Spanish seamlessly within the stanzas. Eerie yet whimsical illustrations, which include twists on traditional Day of the Dead imagery, provide the backdrop. The details on each page will encourage careful observation, and the surprise ending is enjoyable. Glos.

After Paloma wishes she weren't the only kid at the beach without a sibling to play with, she draws a girl in the sand. Her sand sister comes to life--until the tide comes in--and Paloma's parents announce that she'll soon have a permanent sib. The characters aren't developed and the ending narrows the story's appeal, but the acrylic spreads in lush oranges and blues are absorbing.

This edition of Harvesting Hope brings the story of the Latino labor leader to a Spanish-speaking audience. The well-translated text creates a complex view of Chávez, and the mixed-media folk-styled paintings are suffused with a variety of emotions.

Showing how Chavez developed into an advocate and spokesman for migrant workers, Krull focuses on the march he led as part of a grape-pickers strike. The brief text creates a complex view of Chavez, and the mixed-media paintings are suffused with a variety of emotions. There are no sources, but this is an excellent choice for furthering understanding of racism, of nonviolent protest, and of the lives of workers before unions.
