The story is slight, but the vocabulary is accessible(though there is one incorrect Spanish translation). The bright, eye-catching digital illustrations provide visual cues for early readers. Various animals star in these nonsense rhymes about the numbers one through ten: "I watched five arrive / and saw them dive / off their hive / onto the drive. . . ." The computer-assisted illustrations bring the wacky, complicated elements of each rhyme together and add some humorous details of their own. The rhythms are bumpy, but kids might be inspired to come up with their own animal counting rhymes.

(4) K-3 Illustrated by Daniel Moreton. In this simple story, Gil the ant goes from friend to friend, asking "What day is it?" When no one seems to know, a disappointed Gil thinks everyone has forgotten his birthday. Luckily he's been carrying around a party hat, because his friends throw him a surprise party. The appropriately predictable story, with lots of visual clues in the computer illustrations, is nevertheless slight.
