When Artaban stops to heal a man, he's left behind by the three other Magi. After years of helping the distressed, Artaban arrives in Jerusalem just as Jesus is about to be crucified. He's faced with one final dilemma: try to free Jesus or release a girl from captivity. The heartwarming story, told with appropriately formal language, is accompanied by rich, saturated watercolors.

"I wish I had a little boat! / Far away I drift and float, / Where the great blue whales leap, / And pirate ships lie sunken deep." Morris's illustrations of a child's dreamland are a visual lullaby, with lilting images of sea creatures and sandcastles. Mayhew's couplets, though occasionally clunky, are sure to soothe toddlers to sleep.

This captivating story includes some traditional fairy-tale elements: greedy parents, a noble young man searching for a bride, a wise cat, a jester advisor. The tale grows richer with its twist ending, as the princess chosen by the young man instead selects another husband for herself. Painterly illustrations depict a setting spanning different cultures and incorporating magic and realism.

Lloyd-Jones's lyrical text describes the joy of new parents: "People were sleeping. We didn't care. / Good news, we sang, our baby is here!" The text, by itself, celebrates the birth of any baby, but Morris's lush, painterly illustrations make this a specific song in praise of Jesus's arrival. It's an unremarkable, albeit attractive, addition to the Nativity picture-book genre.

Hoffman retells the portions of nine Old Testament stories dealing with animals. Readers are left with only snippets of larger stories, and the stories have little in common except the presence of animals. However, Hoffman's interpretive asides help give context and meaning to the tales, and Morris's illustrations, which clearly set the stories in the Middle East, are handsome.

Featuring nine of Jesus' miracles, the text is both well written and faithful to the scriptures. The watercolors adeptly portray both the characters and the Middle Eastern environment. Easy to read, and with a conversational tone, the short book offers an approachable version of familiar New Testament stories.

Attractive watercolors illustrate eight well-known parables from the Bible. Hoffman's retellings are faithful to the original stories, and the short explanations that precede and follow each selection interpret the spiritual messages and make practical connections to everyday life. Designed and written well, the book is a good introduction to Jesus' teachings.

Eleven pourquoi tales from England's late poet laureate describe how various animals came about--the whale grew from a root in God's garden; the vain rabbit developed his long legs chasing the moon from hilltop to hilltop, trying to marry her. Morris's gentle, natural watercolors of animals, both full-page and spot, add a quiet, well-balanced visual component to Hughes's assured tales.

A lonely old woman finds a merbaby in a giant crab shell and with the help of the merchild's mother, a Sea Spirit, she raises her until she is strong enough to return to the sea. Sweeping watercolor illustrations in blues, greens, and reds, as well as spot illustrations of the sea's treasures, capture the magic in this well-told tale of love and letting go.

The three wise men set off "to find the King of Kings" without Artaban, the fourth wise man, when he stops to help a dying man. Artaban travels his whole life in search of Jesus, often choosing to help others rather than fulfill his own goals. The story is told in appropriately formal language and illustrated with handsome watercolors. An author's note provides more information about the story's origins.
