Lili's mother, who wears a yellow hat, leaves Lili with her grandmother for several days. Because Lili has no sense of time, she thinks she sees her mother whenever she spots something yellow in the distance. Children (and parents) grappling with separation issues will find this nuanced, clearheaded story reassuring. The watercolor illustrations, while executed with care, feature a cast with regrettably doughy facial characteristics.

Each double-page spread features a month of the year: "I am the April rain, / a silvery spray / puddling streets and sidewalks, / splashing away." The slight text is somewhat rambling and often abstract. Attractive gouache and watercolor illustrations depict children engaged in activities appropriate for each month.

While walking in the woods, a child discovers many wonders of nature, from a fawn lying in the grass to a mole in a hole and a hawk circling in the sky. The simple rhyming text describes the animals a careful observer might see and the narrator's joy at discovering this wildlife. Soft watercolor illustrations suit the poem's quiet tone.

The open road outside her window beckons an intrepid little girl. As she rides off on her hobby horse--now transformed into a real horse--the wallpaper fades into wide-open spaces, and the adventure begins. The lulling, hypnotic verse in this alphabet-driven text is ideal for bedtime reading, and many nice touches in the illustrations make a harmonious whole of the book.

A child asks his mother questions about how he can do things animals do, such as, "Without a tail, how can I swing in the breeze?" To each question his mother has an answer: "By ropes and a board, hung from the tallest of trees." Narahashi's gentle watercolors are the book's strength, portraying a world of soft greens and blues in which mother and child have plenty of time for questions and play.
