When the books in Peter's classroom go missing, his dog, "Detective Dog Nell," is on the case. The well-meaning "book thief" simply needed an introduction to the library. With peppy rhyming text (including some wording that reflects the book's UK origins), this action-packed story, illustrated with humorous, colorful vignettes and spreads, is a satisfying celebration of reading, perfect for storytime.

In this British import, Izzy Gizmo loves to invent but does not handle malfunctions well--until her cheerleading grandfather and an injured crow teach her perseverance. Jones's rhyming text is competent, and Ogilvie's brightly colored, hilariously detailed illustrations (which depict Izzy with brown skin and curly hair) are absolutely charming. With their varied angles and overall skillfulness, they amplify the story's depth, humor, and drama.

Daisy is eating pancakes when a big purple rhino strolls into the kitchen, and her parents cut her off when she tries to tell them. Eventually they listen but don't believe her, so they take her to the zoo to show her a real rhinoceros--and end up surprised themselves. Informal multi-media illustrations match the text's casual tone and on-target humor.

Snappy rhymes remind the reader that, while parents can be major nags, they have many points to recommend them--e.g., "Parents are towels for / wiping your grime on. / They're whirlers and twirlers / and tree trunks to climb on." Reinforcing the kid's-eye-view narration, some illustrations are pleasingly faux childlike: several images seem to have been attacked with crayon.
