Young listeners will enjoy this accessible celebration of airplanes and flight: "A plane's flaps slide. / A plane's engines ROAR! / A plane's lights twinkle. / A plane's wings soar." There's lots to look at in the clean, bright gouache illustrations following a happy family from their home to an air show to a ride up into the sky.

In this companion to A Truck Goes Rattley-Bumpa, thickly outlined gouache paintings show a family on a train, while short rhyming couplets describe their journey: "A train hauls cattle. A train hauls steel. / A train carries people who sit for a meal." A yellow bird follows the family, giving toddlers an extra something to look for on each page.

As a girl and her brother walk to the grocery store, we are introduced to her internal map of sights, sounds, and smells. The rhythmic, rhyming text uses pleasing repetition; the childlike gouache paintings provide a subtext: at the beginning, we see the parents preparing a birthday surprise. When the children return home, there are presents, cake, and guests, whom careful observers will recognize from previous pages.

The setting for this old folktale is a contemporary school, which Roche playfully equips for characters sized like Borrowers--the six teeny tiny pupils, for example, sit on dice. The setting draws young readers immediately into the story and introduces some delicious incongruities. Try telling Joseph Jacobs's "Teeny Tiny" along with this one, and let children make their own comparisons.
