Little Martin continually misbehaves in a bratty--although age-appropriate--way, acting greedily and showering his beleaguered (and somewhat spineless) mother with water at every chance. New readers may recognize the antics of those younger than they, but the humor is really directed at adults. Comic, if exaggerated, illustrations help break up the text.

As an Indian mother lovingly cares for her baby, a baya bird builds and decorates a nest. The subject matter suggests a preschool audience, but the detailed watercolors, while lovely, are subtle, and the poetic text, sprinkled with a few Hindi words, is rather complex. The baya bird's behavior is further explained in an author's note. This is more mood piece than story.

Finding a dead ladybug, a brother and sister begin a neighborhood trend by burying it beneath a decorated rock after a mock funeral. But when Buster, a pet cat, dies, his funeral isn't any fun. Planting a small garden around Buster's grave helps attract butterflies for a new kitten to chase, a comfort for the mourners if not for the butterflies--all pictured with appealing gouache illustrations.

When each monster arrives for Halloween, he brings an ingredient--a frog, spider, lizard, and bat--for the monster stew. By mistake, however, the littlest one tips the pot over, and the ingredients scurry away. All is not lost when another monster appears with trick-or-treat candy. Although the title doesn't really reflect the story, the goofy monster watercolors and snappy rhyme make this an amusing tale.
