Illustrated by
Charles Santore.
Adult fans of the classic sentimental story will be pleased that this edition contains the original, unabridged text, though it makes for a lengthy picture-book narrative. Fans of Santore's realistic style of painting will also be pleased: the large trim size of the volume adds to the drama of the artist's detailed, if stiff and formal, illustrations.

Almost as lushly detailed as those in Nancy Burkert's classic edition of the tale, Santore's lavish illustrations display a fidelity to the particulars of the story (capably retold here) that children will appreciate. While not Disney-cute, the paintings are picturesque, and the large format recommends the book to use with groups.

Andersen's tale of desire, love, and sacrifice showcases Santore's lush illustrations of mermaids (loose, flowing hair strategically placed over bare breasts), the prince's sumptuous palace, and the tempestuous and undulating sea. Save for a few awkward poses in the paintings, it's a well-rendered presentation.

This edition has been skillfully condensed for those not ready for the longer original work. Santore's many paintings, including spot art and full- and double-page spreads, add a successful dose of drama to the classic fantasy.

A droll, if somewhat whiny, camel laments his lot in this presentation of Carryl's Learian turn-of-the-century rhyme: "Weasels / are wavy and sleek... / But a camel's all lumpy / and bumpy and humpy-- / ANY shape does it for me!" Santore's goggle-eyed poodles and droopy-lidded camels have character aplenty, but they don't quite make up for the poem's abrupt ending.

As Longfellow's narrative poem opens, a rapt mid-nineteenth-century audience at the historic Wayside Inn listens to an old storyteller relate the tale of Revere's famous ride. The accompanying illustrations in a somber palette are all action and angle: dramatic, varied perspectives put readers right in the middle of the events. This stirring version of an American classic gallops right along.

In celebration of the one-hundredth birthday of Baum's landmark novel, Santore's oversized picture book, which includes an introduction by Michael Patrick Hearne, has been reissued. Expansive illustrations, bursting with color, depict Dorothy's adventures in the Land of Oz. The abridged text, which has been expertly condensed, retains Baum's original wording.
