"'Just one more,' says Sleepyhead. / 'I promise then I'll go to bed.'" A cat indulges its teddy bear's wish for "one more" hug, book, etc., until the sleepy bear conks out. This entry in the forestalling-bedtime picture-book genre features rich fantasy settings (Sleepyhead escapes up a giraffe's neck) in soothing, sure-handed watercolors.

"I am yours / You are mine. / Mama loves you, / Porcupine," begins this series of rhymed quatrains expressing the love of animal mothers for their little ones. While some verses are better constructed than others, mothers and babies will appreciate the genuine warmth throughout. Segal's art features large-scale animals rendered against plain backdrops, suitable for the young audience.
