Momentary thoughtlessness destroys months of work when a boy and his friends pelt each other with vegetables from an elderly man's garden. Despite the unattractively sun-bleached illustrations, the story makes a strong emotional impact as it chronicles the beginnings of the lifelong friendship that ensues the following year when the remorseful boy offers to help the man replant his garden.

Colors of the World series.
This brief book uses ten colors to introduce Germany's history, culture, folklore, and geographic attributes. Each illustrated double-page spread focuses on one color (named in English and German, with pronunciation). Unfortunately, some colors are only tenuously related to the topic (the pink eyes of Hansel and Gretel's witch, for example), and the given pronunciation of 'blau' is poor. A map is included. Ind.
