A unicorn wishes he had wings. When he admires the wings of a butterfly, bluebird, and swan, they say that their wings aren't right for him. After healing a magical winged horse, he finally gets his wish. The simple, repetitive text works well for beginning readers, and the decorative, dreamy (although somewhat cheesy) illustrations complement the story's tone.

In this generally entertaining retelling of the classic tale, the royal family is made up of bunnies in medieval garb, the good fairies are winged piglets, etc. Occasionally, the puns and overabundance of exclamation points disrupt the narrative flow; but the elaborate paintings, which feature bright colors on dark backdrops, convey humor without slighting the story's solemn elements.

Except for the fact that Beauty is a rabbit and Beast is a bull terrier--details that don't really affect the story much--this picture book is a fairly traditional version of the well-known tale. Silin-Palmer's romantic illustrations fill the pages with a riot of flowers and luxurious patterns, which make Bunny's humble cottage seem just as opulent as the Beast's ornate castle.
